Did you know ?
Repatriation by helicopter costs between 800 and 3000 euros. Every year, some runners are caught out by not having made sufficient arrangements. However, the rules of the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® demand that you will have individual insurance.Too many runners are negligent about this essential rule. For only 35 euros, the annual Ultrafondus "Multi-Endurances" card is exactly what you need. It gives you a ‘Europ Assistance’ guarantee, for a large range of sports, valid world-wide, should you be training, on reconnaissance or running a race, for French and European citizens.

Editorial
The three musketeers(*)

Matos, Sécuritos, Equitis(**). The three musketeers of the 8th Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® will protect you against any hazards, unfairness or unfavourable conditions. Matos(**) is your knight’s armour (it’s an image, well a symbol) which will protect you against external attacks. Matos(**), is like James Bond’s ‘Q’, who supplies you with all the necessary gadgets for survival in a hostile environment, the eco beaker as the Swiss army knife, not forgetting the good old poncho. Sécuritos(**), as for him, he’ll be discreet in fact barely visible but he will supply Matos(**) with several of his attributes (bandages, mobile phone, etc.). Equitis(**), will be he philosopher of the group, the spirit who will reassure you whether in front or behind,
Everybody is in the same boat, with the same regulations, the same penalties if necessary…. but not the same legs, I think you will agree. And your role in all this? You have the best role, that of d'Artagnan(*) (or of Artagnane?). Trust in your new friends be content on ‘D’ day to run, jump, twirl, eat, drink and to party.

|
(*) From Alexandre Dumas' novel - The Three Musketeers - who are Athos, Porthos and Aramis. The fourth hero is D'Artagnan.
(**) Matos = Athos = Material
Securitos = Porthos = Security
Equitis = Aramis = Equity |
| The ethical charter
The values which unite us |
|
To benefit from the festival, everybody must share a certain number of values. Competitors, volunteers, the organisation and partners must unite to ensure that it all runs fairly with respect and solidarity, to produce a unique experience.
Equity
• The regulations were conceived for, and apply to, everybody equally.
• No financial reward, but the same prize for all competitors who finish the race.
Respect for others
• Respect for oneself and for others by allowing absolutely no form of cheating
• Respect for the volunteers who also participate for pleasure
• Respect for the locals who accommodate the race
• Respect for the organisation and its partners
Respect for nature
• Never drop rubbish on the ground
• Respect the fauna and flora
• Do not short-cut the paths because this provokes erosional damage to the site
• Favour, for both yourself and those accompanying you, the use of communal transport or car-pooling.
Solidarity
• Putting others before oneself by helping anybody in difficulty or danger
• Support a charitable association: this gives one the chance to put one’s own suffering in to perspective and to appreciate one’s privileges
Exploring one’s limits
• Get to know oneself and develop a self-autonomy with which to reach one’s limits while respecting one’s physical and moral integrity.
"l'Ultra, is looking for inner resources which one didn’t think existed"
"l'Ultra, is a bit of pride and a lot of humility"

| MATOS All that is indispensable, necessary and recommended |
The obligatory equipment, as its name suggests is…obligatory. It is really worth the hassle of stopping for a few minutes, a good few minutes, to read the following list, which can not only help you along the way, but also save you.
Indispensable and obligatory
1. Mobile (cell) phone : this is new, this accessory has changed from being optional to obligatory so that the organisation can call or send you a message at any time before, during or after the race.
2. Personal beaker(goblet) minimum 15cl capacity, water bottles excluded : this is to avoid the waste of thousands of disposable beakers.
3. Water reservoir of one litre minimum : allowing you to keep hydrated between refreshment posts. 1.5 or 2 litres is not a bad idea.
4. TWO torches in good working order with spare batteries : imagine yourself alone at night deep in the mountains, in the rain without any light. A frightening thought ? In any case dangerous.
5. Survival blanket : this is not just in case of danger but also for protection during a prolonged stop (due to injury for example).
6. Elasticised self-adhesive bandage 80 cm x 3 cm : if you twist an ankle, a knee, a wrist, then this bandage will help you get to next control point and help to minimise the pain.
7. Food reserve : as for water, the food reserve keeps you going between refreshment posts but also if you become lost or injured.
8. Waterproof jacket : the race that you going to run takes placed during the summer, it is necessary however to think of it as a cold race. The temperatures can be negative and the rain - or snow – can last for hours, dozens of hours.
9. Race trousers or leggings : thighs and knees must be protected, for the same reasons as point 8. If it is fine you may run in shorts, with your warm clothes in your pack.
10. Cap or bandana : to protect you against the cold and sun. Yes, it can also be very hot.
11. Identification papers : small risk of being controlled at the border, but if you are the one who is controlled, it is best to have the means to avoid being penalised.
Necessary
If you believe that is all then you are wrong! Believe our experience, the equipment which follows is highly recommended and if we have put it on the list it is because we know that it is best to be prepared.
1. Gloves, warm clothing, hat : indispensible if the conditions become severe.
2. 20 euros in cash : the price of the unexpected.
Advice
No, it still isn’t finished! We add a third level to the list, which is the comfort level. Unnecessary to be overloaded, but think carefully about the following items, this could be the decider when you are thinking about abandoning (for example).).
1. Walking poles
2. Change of clothes
3. Compass
4. Knife
5. String
6. Sun cream
7. Vaseline or anti-chaffing cream
8. Sewing kit

| SECURITOS It is also your concern |
Security begins with your awareness, and foremost the equipment which you have with you. Then again, it is vital that you realize the specificity of the event for which you are enrolled.
Here is one more short list to learn by heart, or at least to reread regularly. Something to chew over, it is all there. To participate, it is indispensible :
• to be totally aware of the length and the specificity of the event and to be trained accordingly
• to have acquired, beforehand, a real capacity for personal autonomy permitting you to manage the problems encountered during an event of this nature
• to be fully aware that the role of the organisation is not that of helping a competitor to manage these problems
• to be fully aware that for such an event held in the heart of the countryside security depends upon the capacity of the competitor to adapt to encountered or foreseeable problems
Individual Insurance ? O-bli-ga-tory !
Each competitor must be in possession of a personal accident insurance cover with includes any eventual costs of search and rescue in France, Italy and Switzerland. This policy maybe taken out with the company of your choice. If you are insured with the French Athletics Federation, you will already have this cover. Ultrafondus also offers this form of cover including Europ Assistance which is specially put together for competitors of the Ultra-Trail® (Multi-Endurances card). |

| EQUITIS Everybody is equal |
As the regulations are made to be respected, they are, above all, to give the same chance to everybody. Alongside all the events around Mont-Blanc which we organise, there is our ethical charter, which advocates respect, sharing, self – knowledge and, for sure, equity.
Keep your obligatory equipment with you
...throughout the entire race. It is the same whether you are at the head or tail of the race To be sure that this point is respected, the pack presented at the distribution of race bibs will be tagged and must weigh a minimum of 2kg at the beginning of the race or at the exit of the refreshment posts (and never less than 1kg at any other point of the race). Look at the list of obligatory equipment listed above and you will see that 2kg is the extreme option!
Assistance or accompaniment ?
You may be assisted at the official refreshment points in the conditions well defined in the regulations, this excludes all professional organisations (teams, doctors, etc.). Accompaniment along the race route is strictly forbidden for any person not registered but is tolerated at the edges of the refreshment posts.
Penalties
We swear that the system of penalties was not put in place to annoy you, there is a 99% chance that you haven’t even noticed the system. Why are we so sure? Because we know that if we find you in Chamonix at the end of August, it is because you have already the conscience of a mountain person.
You could all the same have a look at our penalty table. It condemns cheating, lack of solidarity, and disrespect of nature. Simple but indisputable.
Are you sponsored?
That’s great, but you are not allowed to display any publicity other than that on your clothes or materials used during the race. No flags in the name of X, no banners for Y. |
