Editorial
Why ?

Why did you embark on this hellish adventure? We have no idea why we are taking on the mountain in this way….dozens of kilometres and hours, endless passes to cross, hundreds of metres of positive height gain, hundreds of thousands of strides. This is what awaits you, and you wonder maybe, in any case we hope you ask, "Why?". The answer is, doubtless, in the question. You are there precisely to understand why you work like that and not otherwise, why you have pain in your muscles, why the gels do not work, why the guys in front go up faster than you, why the refreshment posts so seem far away, why! The Ultra a poses many more questions than it resolves, and this is, paradoxically, its great strength. Each question generates another, in exactly the same way as one step follows another one. We acquire not only the humility of one who knows nothing, or not a lot, but the force of
curiosity, which draws on information and continues drawing on it. One now has an idea of our passion for studies carried out concerning the ultra runner. They are endless, they allow us to advance, and will help you, maybe, to advance a little farther still.

Aim of the medical committee: to know you better

Year after year, researchers, doctors, and the runners themselves understand, a bit better, the efforts of ultra-endurance. The medical committee of the Ultra-Trail of Mont Blanc®, has since 2007, made its contribution by supporting, or by organising itself, ground studies.

Who? Chaired by Doctor Laurence Gautier-Poletti and composed of diverse members of the medical and paramedical profession who participate actively in the event, it aims at optimizing the concrete organisation of the medical follow-up of  runners and to manage diverse research subjects, which then become the object of official publications. It contributes at the conclusion of each event by assessing the medical activity during the races, the action against doping (performance enhancing drugs) and advises the race directors on the corrective or new measures to be taken.

Why? Each year, by taking advantage of a very large number of athletes gathered for a high stamina event  which is world-famous, under the control of the medical committee, specialists are able to organise scientific research by drawing on The North Face® Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc®. These studies then appear in scientific journals, naturally, and shortly after on www.ultratrailmb.com and in the specialist publications, in a version adapted for runners.

For example? The Mont-Blanc Coeur et Sport association, regional unit of the sport’s cardiologists club, carried out a study to establish a health picture of the heart and to increase the trailer’s awareness to the cardiovascular risks. Other research was organised during previous UTMB®s (rhabdomyolyse and fatigue due to great endurance in particular).

What else? A subject preoccupies you all at one moment or another:  gastric and intestinal problems encountered during endurance sports. They are the cause of numerous abandonments and will be the object of a survey during the 2010 event.

CHARTER All against doping

Ethics. A sweet idea which frequently circulates in the trailing world: it will not be touched by doping. By what happy miracle? Just as the protection of our environment or the respect for rules, the question of the use of forbidden products hides many other causes such as the mediatisation of a discipline, money or ability. To preserve the spirit of Ultra-Trail® and its authenticity, we have for several years led actions of control and prevention reassuring us, and "you", that our races take place fairly, and even "ethically". A modest contribution, made voluntarily by runners and for runners, with vigilance, so that our sport remains clean and our mechanics function perfectly.

Make a commitment! We suggest that all the runners sign the ethical charter of Ultra-Trail®. Conceived originally so that the top athletes show an exemplary path by engaging voluntarily to the most perfect transparency, the ethical Charter of Ultra-Trail® addresses all runners, without distinction of country, objective, or level. To sign it, is to show approval for principles in which we all believe in, whether as runners, organisers, partners or volunteers.

If you are happy to sign the charter, all you have to do is go the consultation page of your runners file, then mark the box corresponding to the unconditional respect for all the items of the Ultra-Trail® ethical charter.

LEARN The causes of abandonment

In 2008 and 2009, le club Mont-Blanc Cœur et Sport, whose the members are cardiologists and sport’s doctors, launched a study the purpose of which was to better understand the motives for the abandonments during the various races. Numerous of you participated, and we would like to thank you. You can discover in two slide shows the results of this study, the most surprising part is the link to digestive disorders. So as to prevent them, do not hesitate in consulting Corinne Peirano’s judicious advice on our web-site.

To know more, consult the results of this study on our web-site.

ARE YOU A PARTY to that gurgle?

Many of you were, are, or will be victims of digestive disorders during long-distance races. Their forms can turn out as varied as disagreeable, from abdominal pains to nausea, by way of vomiting or diarrhoea. The list is long.

In an effort to improve the management of these problems and to give you solutions for future races, a medical study on nutritional habits and their consequences in terms of performance is, at present, in progress.

Naturally, this work cannot be undertaken without your help. That is why we are asking you for ten minutes of your time to answer a questionnaire concerning the various aspects of your eating habits. This questionnaire remains anonymous: the medical team responsible for the study has no access to your personal information with your number of file.

The results of the study will then be shared with you to improve your nutritional preparation for the other endurance events.

The more you are, to answer this questionnaire (even if you are not subject to the digestive disorders during the Ultra-Trail® races), the more reliable the ensuing scientific results will be.

To answer, click the link below, tick the boxes, enter your number of file and click to send. That’s all.

ADVICE Eat, eat, but eat well!

Achievements in ultras such as the PTL, the UTMB®, the TDS or the CCC®, rest partially on an increasingly good diet, during and after the race.

Indeed to be well nourished means adopting a diet balanced in proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, that is in relation to the energy expenditure required while exercising. When the exercise is intense and prolonged, as on an ultra - trail with a lot of height gain, the proteins have to produce, as they do every day, amino acids which are indispensable for tissue renewal. They also prevent muscular wasting during effort, and at the same time facilitating the repair of the muscular tissue damaged by the eccentric movements of running.

Carbohydrates are not to be neglected because they contribute to the constitution of stocks glycogens, hepatic and muscular, in the days preceding the race. Glucose for effort remains indispensable even if long-term exercise uses lipids as major energy source.

Read the continuation on our page " Dietetics and nutrition " led by Corinne Peirano, dietician-nutritionist, graduate of the university of sports nutrition who teaches to sport’s nutrition to degree level at CHU(teaching hospital) Pity Salpétrière, consultant in sport’s nutrition to the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc®, consultant dietary and nutrition editor of Ultrafondus magazine and also ultra trail runner!

Corinne Peirano will lead a conference on the theme of eating disorders during Ultra-Trail®. This conference will take place on Thursday, August 26th at 11 am within the framework of the Ultra-Trail® salon.

DISCOVER kinesio taping

Kinesio taping is a new way of approaching muscular, tendinous, ligamentary and circulatory disorders. This new Japanese retention technique is used to provoke small cutaneous detachments with multiple effects concerning microcirculatory, cutaneous, muscular levels which will be presented to you during a conference which will take place during the Ultra-Trail ® Salon on Thursday at 15:30. This conference will present the physiological effects and the applications of the kinesio taping for trailers and will be led by Philippe Jacquemard, physio-osteopath, the person responsible for UTMB® physios since 2003 and an Ultra-Trail runner®, Sébastien Echinnard and Ludovic Delaunay, responsible  for physio’s kinesio taping training in France.

An action of prevention tests on runners showing known and recurring pathologies during long distance races will be realised during the 2010 UTMB®. For this reason, we are looking for between 20 & 30 runners registered on the UTMB®, who are keen to participate in this experience and who have already suffered on a previous Ultra-Trail® :
- whether of the inflammation of the kick or of the elevator tendons of the foot
- or of the inflammation of the joint or tendons of the knee.
We suggest you contact us by e-mail so as to study your pathological profile and to schedule of an appointment during the distribution of the race bibs, where we will be present. If you are interested, please send us an email to jacquemard.philippe@wanadoo.fr
